Sugar in Print ~ Montana Editorial Photography

The newest edition of Barron's Weimaraners: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual is now in print.  When I bought my copy the day I got Sugar I never imagined that when they reissued it years later that she and I would be gracing the inside of it on multiple pages (I did not take the cover image).  This or any book on the care of and behavior of weims is a must have if you are new to the breed.

I think they chose some great shots of mine to illustrate the book and there a few more not shown here (the smaller images on the layouts below are also not mine).

Thanks, Sugar, for the inspiration and the work!

Art of Our Century ~ Montana Fine Art Photography

Just got news that I have been selected by jurors Julie Nester and Melissa Soltesz to be part of the Woodbury Art Museum's "Art of Our Century" exhibit at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The show runs July 5 through August 8 and is of contemporary work from artists in the western region of the United States.

They've selected the image below from my series "Going to See Him, Marion, Montana".

Kayaking & Flathead Lake ~ Montana Editorial Photography

Did you know that you can fit almost six Manhattan islands on Flathead Lake, the largest fresh water lake west of the Mississippi?  Yes, it's true.  And equally hard to grasp is that the population of Manhattan (residents only, not workers) is 1.6 million people.  Compare that to the entire state of Montana that currently has just 1,000,000 folks and is over 4000 times as large as Manhattan.

Just some thoughts I had recently, and then while kayaking on the lake got to feel those statistics as I heard through the silence the sound of a bird's feet dragging along the water surface as it went fishing in the beautiful emptiness of the lake.  I was not out that day on an assignment so I missed capturing that bird in a way that I could share it here, but I was in the dreamiest place out on the water on a wonderous day feeling practically lost at sea.

Here are some shots that I did get that day taken on my Canon G12.  And out of my love for Flathead Lake I've also included some of my favorites I've shot over the past two years in different seasons including one of my favorite traffic light at the north end of the lake and the only traffic light I've ever met that I always hope is red when I get to it so that I am forced to stop and take in the view.

Beth & Chad ~ Montana Wedding Photography

Once again I'm feeling a little nostalgic for the days of film.  Oh, and also for the days when I was the only one at the wedding with a camera and none of the guests were distracted by their own gadgets!  This is the amazingly intimate wedding of Beth & Chad that I shot in 1999.  So long ago it seems but yet the images are everything I strive to achieve even today.  It took place entirely at Harkness Memorial State Park in Connecticut and it couldn't have been a more wonderful experience to have gotten to document.  I remember being very nervous (it was only about my 10th wedding) that there would be so few people and wondering what on earth I would even photograph and that they wanted it all in black and white (yes, b/w film).  Then I got there and saw all the wonderful smiling faces of their family and friends and my job was suddenly very obvious and easy.

For my of my early wedding photography check out this post of the first wedding I ever did on Martha's Vineyard in 1995.
