In 1996 I found myself in Connecticut and had a chance to attend one of the biggest powwows of the time on the Mashantucket Pequot reservation. Schemitzun was the most visually and aurally stimulating thing I had experienced. It was a blur of motion and music until I got up the courage to focus on one individual, Tommy Christian, Assiniboine Sioux, and photograph him in his little red sports car when the rains began.
